As a member of the GOP dominated Ohio Ballot Board, Secretary of State LaRose wrote the language voters would see on the ballot for the anti-gerrymandering Issue 1 that said it would REQUIRE gerrymandering. In dissenting from the state Supreme Court's approval, Democratic Justice Jennifer Brunner called it “ the most stunningly stilted ballot language that Ohio voters will have ever seen.”

In 2023, Commentator Marilou Johanek noted how the Secretary of State transformed from a self-described non-partisan chief of Ohio's elections in 2020 to a MAGA extremist in 2022...writing biased ballot language and actively campaigning against issues like the Reproductive Rights Amendment.
